Young Adult
Young Adult (YA) fiction is technically a demographic not a genre
The young adult category is targeted towards young adult readers, aged 12+ and the word count of these usually fall in the 50,000-100,000 words. It can encompass almost every form of storytelling imaginable. Be it graphic novels, comic, low and high art or chapter books, full novels or novellas. The only thing connecting such a diverse array of stories being told in modern YA fiction is that usually all revolve around the experiences of teenage protagonists.
Did you know while the genre is targeted to adolescents,
approximately half of YA readers are adults
Quality is paramount
Novels for young adults need to be extremely well-written and engrossing. All publishing requires the highest quality writing and YA is no different.
Write more often
We are certainly not averse to helping author/publishers set up one YA book but series publishing in YA works better for several reasons. Firstly, series sell. Secondly, this target group are voracious readers and they will be looking for the next novel straight away (just in time). Thirdly, if you’re going to spend a significant amount of money in marketing a book, it’s harder to justify doing it on a single stand-alone.
We can demonstrate how to brand your cover and create simple interior formatted books at affordable prices – hence giving you the opportunity to keep writing.
An evolving category
It’s important to understand that what young adults want to read is evolving. While you don’t have to follow trends, it’s helpful to research what other writers are doing and what trade publishers are monitoring. This will give you an indication of the market place.
