Would we prefer our children to be spiritually illiterate?

Would we prefer our children to be spiritually illiterate? What we mean by this is that a child does not see the web, which connects us with other people and the natural world.

Being spiritually illiterate means that we do not have access to open doors of intuition, inspiration and information that lead to more fulfilling lives. Like other well known illiteracies we would live in a shallower world with less opportunities, and probably a limited meaning and a reduced capacity to create our preferred future.

In ‘Care of the Soul’ by T.Moores “Some might go further to say that being spiritually illiterate can lead to increased feelings of purposelessness, disconnection, isolation and loneliness in the world.”

Three amazing spiritual pioneers explain it perfectly!

As Tobin Hart PHD explains “There is something remarkable about the presence of children in our busy lives. Our hearts reach out to a child in pain. We gladly touch an infant, if just for a moment, and feel blessed by the experience. We do silly things to get a child’s attention and our hearts sing if we get an unbidden compliment from a child. Children open us up to the spiritual nature within ourselves, a need to love and to be loved”.

The great spiritual teacher, Black Elk, put it this way: "Grown men may learn from very little children, for the hearts of little children are pure, and, therefore, the Great Spirit may show them many things which older people miss." Moreover, children seem to awaken within us the childhood we once enjoyed or perhaps, missed, due to circumstances beyond our control; the adventure, body wisdom, living and experiencing everything directly.

” A child raised with spiritual skills will be able to answer the most basic questions about how the universe works. They will understand the source of creativity both within and outside themselves. They will be able to practice non-judgement, acceptance and truth….And they will be free from crippling fear and anxiety about the meaning of life that is the secret dry rot inside the hearts of most adults.” Deepak Chopra.

If we keep the minds of our children open to spirituality, they can only but show: the trait we would hope to see in ourselves: love, compassion and service; honesty and authenticity; physical, emotional, mental and spiritual clarity; responsibility and discipline; serenity; personal freedom; tolerance and patience; faith, trust, and inner security; wisdom and understanding; gratitude, humility and willingness; hope, happiness, joy, and humour; connection with the earth, nature and everyday life; living in the present moment or in the now; a sense of wonder, mystery, and reverence to life; a sense of purpose and place in the universe.

Why wouldn’t we want this for ourselves and our children?

At Pickawoowoo we believe we are contributing towards the unfolding of spiritual understanding by the creation of spiritual stories for children. What we particularly like about this passion of ours is that the authors are ordinary people who have, through circumstance, come to realise a greater truth about life. They are simply telling what they know and are willing to share their truth– but that's what makes them so special! The stories are written and packaged like yesteryear where the words and illustrations are so important. It’s not about winning awards and having great designs, (although our designer would beg to differ)

Pickawoowoo’s more 'soulful' approach to books seeks to open the mind, warm the heart and awaken the spirit of each and every child (and the reader too).
